In ancient times any gem that was yellow was called topaz. In fact, the name topaz may have been derived from a Sanskrit word meaning "fire". Today we know that topaz also occurs in white crystals, as well as pink, blue, green, brown, and a sherry red color.

Topaz occurs in many locations, but Brazil is the main source.


Topaz is a heavy stone and is a number 8 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest stones. These factors enable it to take a high polish, making it a very attractive stone for jewelry.
